Accountability from Ken: When Things Go Wrong

If your journey toward developing a Culture of Accountability within your department doesn’t yet have the outcomes you are looking for, it usually means that the results you want were not clearly defined.

Ask yourself this question, “can everyone on my team tell me what the desired results are that I’m looking for?” If your honest answer to yourself is “no”, then you need to spend more time on the following key steps:

  1. Make sure the results you were looking for are consistent with the organizational goals/vision and that they are truly obtainable.
  2. Do a great job of explaining “Why” the results are needed.
  3. Get agreement from every member of the team that they understand the goals.
  4. Inspect the process by listening and observing what is happening. You need to stay engaged throughout the process and support the team in every way you can.
Remember to take ownership for the final results. When they aren’t what you were expecting, then ask yourself “How did I let that Happen”.
