Accountability from Ken: Communicating the Compelling "Why"

Accountability starts with the compelling “WHY”

The pivotal point in accountability and engagement is grasping the importance of the compelling “Why” for your team. The most effective “Whys” need to address and convince each individual that accomplishing the “What” and “When” matters to them on a personal level. If accountability appears to only be working in your team while you are driving the process ask yourself the following questions:

• Did you tailor the “Why” to your team?

• Did you make it short, simple, and clear?

• Were you candid, honest, and forthcoming so people believe it is genuine?

• Did you make the “Why” a dialogue and not a monologue?

• Was there a “hook” that catches your team’s attention?

• Did you frame it in a way to show them how it fits into the big picture?

So, when things just don’t go as planned, take a look at these key points and ask honestly ask yourself if the communication of your expectations could have been improved.
