Oktoberfest at Masonic Pathways

Guten Tag! Or as we say in English: Hello, and good day! All of us at Masonic Home in Alma, Michigan learned a few key German words today was we celebrated Oktoberfest. The meal featured a hand breaded pork chop, braised red cabbage, whole grain mustard spaetzel (the German versions of very small dumplings), and German chocolate cake.  When asking the residents about the meal, many said they enjoyed it because it reminded them of their heritage. A few residents even said it reminded them of the German food they used to eat when they were serving overseas.
We decorated the dining hall in a traditional Oktoberfest manor. We had centerpieces, a menu for the meal with a quiz all about Oktoberfest inside it, and we laid fun facts and “learn to speak German” cards at each table. Residents loved the hands on materials and reading the quiz questions among their tables. Overall, the meal was very well received and we are looking forward to our next theme meal.
