Healthy Holiday Eating at Smith Crossing

As we approach the holiday season, our dietitian, Maggie Stock, presented our residents with a lecture on eating healthy during the holidays.  She gave them tips and tricks to get through the holidays without over eating, such as not skipping meals and using mindful eating as a technique.  The residents were thankful for the information and impressed with Maggie’s knowledge.

Americans gain approximately 1-2 lbs during the holiday season. Here are some tips to help you through the holidays:
  • Making a New Year’s Eve goal will likely allow you to overeat during the holidays with the mindset that you’re going to be a new person on January 1
  • Skipping meals causes you to overeat and consume more calories
  • Snack on raw vegetables avoid the dip or try hummus. You’ll get vitamins and fiber and it can help you not overeat at the actual meal
  •  Fill your plate with leafy greens, vegetables, lean proteins
  • Putting sauces on the side can help save calories and fat
  • Eating slowly can help you enjoy the meal. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to register that it’s full.
