Submitted by Ashley Rohan: An idea that I took back from the Hospitality Summit to Smith
Crossing was creating your own definition of hospitality. I did a training
session with my servers where we discussed hospitality. I listed the
recognizable hospitality characteristics from the summit and also had the
servers list their own characteristics of hospitality. After this I had them
create their own definitions of hospitality. They had some great definitions
including “Hospitality is about serving in such a way that the dining experience
become more memorable than just another meal”, “Always willing to go that extra
mile or out of the way”, “Genuine caring for genuine service”, etc. The
definitions were then posted on our board right outside the kitchen for everyone
to see before starting their day.
