Fulton Manor: Compass in the Community

Cooking Matters is a Nationwide Program helping adults and teens to eat healthier. http://cookingmatters.org/ They like to pair a nutritionist with a chef for a course that meets for two hours, one night a week, for seven weeks. They start out with basics like knife skills and cover many other topics including myplate.gov guidelines and smart shopping habits. The sixth week is an actual trip to the grocery store to try and buy a healthy meal for four for under $10! There was a score sheet with points for nutritious choices, having all 5 food groups and a prize for the best total. I got points for a healthy, nutritious meal ( Pumpkin half filled with curried brown rice and lentils) but went way over the limit, $12.78, and was disqualified. Cooking Matters is offered through the MSU extension office here in Kent County and the program is active in every other county in Michigan too. I encourage everyone to get involved with this worthwhile organization.
