Diversity Activities from January

United Presbyterian Homes of Iowa
Here at the UP Home we handed out "What I Have Done" index cards to each associate, they wrote down something interseting they have done in their life time. Corrine shuffled the cards and read each out loud and we guessed who did what. It was a lot of fun getting to know more about each other.

The staff at ADP Cafe chose to do the activity a new year a new team.
We discussed the many successes of 2011 which included a cafe redesign and a restaurant menu. To make this year better for our customers we agreed we will pick one project a month to complete as a team. It was decided that the first months project will be a menu redesign adding more vegetarian and gluten free items.
We also took the opportunity to discuss how we can enrich the lives of each other by asking "what makes your day difficult". Through this conversation we learned how we can use our unique skills and talents to assist each other.

AM McGregor Home
During our Showtimes, we did activity 2. I handed out index cards to our associates and had them write down a unique skill or something interesting about them. We then shuffled them up, and read them out loud and guessed who was who. The staff really enjoyed it, laughing and learning some interesting things. They also learned interesting facts about their director! We then discussed the cool things that we've done individually and what we've accomplished this past year as a team.

Smith Village

This past January, Smith Village participated in the “Whose Done it” activity. The team really enjoyed getting to know each other and trying to guess who had completed each activity. Overall, we were not able to successfully guess the person who completed most activities, which helped us realize the importance of getting to know individuals from different areas (cook, server, utility aide). The group had a great time completing this activity, and in the end we discussed how each of these experiences can help us relate to our residents, or benefit the team. We had a lot of fun and it was great to see everyone discuss openly and honestly the many things they have accomplished.

CJE
This Month we put our diversity board in front of the kitchen so all the employees can see it.

The project we picked this month is promoting team work. All the team wrote what they did to promote team work and what other team members did to make it hard to have team work. I wanted to have the team see where we needed to improve, so we really work as a team.

Schoolcraft
For this month's diversity action our team did both activities at our monthly meeting. We started out the meeting with the Who's done it activity as an ice breaker to loosen people up and help introduce a new employee to the team. Then we finished the meeting with the New Year, New Team activity and had the employees state one thing that worked this past year, one thing that didn't, and one thing they are going to do everyday this next year. Most employees responded positively to both activities.
Central Baptist Village
For the month of January I decide to put a spin on the index card activity. I have a large group of employees so I wanted to make something short and sweat that the employees would participate in. So I made 6 index cards with the same 3 identical questions. I handed out the cards to 6 employees and they answered the questions. I collected the cards back from the 6 participants and read the answers aloud. We spent time with this activity in 2 different meetings.
The 3 questions:
  • When did you starts at CBV? Answers: 2006-2011
  • What is your favorite musical group? Answers: 12 different answers wide range of musical taste
  • How many languages do you speak? Answers: 2-7 languages
The employees in the staff meeting took guesses on who the employee could be on the card. Many of the employees could guess the employee by their musical taste or language skills. This just really shows how well our staff knows each other. The answers from the questions also show what a diverse group we have at CBV. The group really enjoyed this activity and again was very willing to participate.

Oakwood Common
What Have I Done Activity
A couple of them did Volunteer work, one of them knows sign language, One of them Donated her hair to locks of love, couple of them traved to places like Panamal & Hawaii.

Three Crowns Park
The team members at Three Crowns Park discussed ways to improve the dining areas for the year 2012. Every member selected their own personal work related resolution in order to enhance the dining experience of the facility. The team also completed the team-building "Who's Done It" activity discussing similarities and differences among the group and how it plays an important role in accomplishing success. The team discovered more reasons to appreciate those around us.

Smith Crossing
Smith Crossing completed both diversity activities for the month of January. The Resolution Activity is the one shown in the picture. Smith Crossing had a Resolution Day on January 7th open to the entire community. Resolution Pages were posted on the Dining Services people board located outside the kitchen. Everyone was invited to write down their own resolutions. Then the dining services staff addressed new improvements that were made during 2011. All the dining staff was then asked to write a resolution for their jobs here at Smith Crossing. There were lots of good resolutions such as learning more about our residents, find out residents favorite meals, memorize drink orders, be more patient, always smile, stay on top of labeling, etc. As part of our calendar of events for February we are going to go back and revisit these resolutions to see how the staff is progressing in their resolutions. The other diversity activity was also completed. The staff had a lot of fun with the who am I and they learned a lot of interesting facts about each other. It was a great team building exercise. The staff was able to find out similarities and differences between each other which was very educational and fun.

Indiana Masonic Home
The activity we chose to do at the Indiana Masonic Homes was activity two. Chad Brown and I handed out index cards and had some really interesting feed back. It was interesting to found out three people had all been to Orlando, Florida, and all for different reasons. We thought it is was a joke when someone wrote Saudi Arabia, but it turns out he was in the military where he transported tanks and explosives. Another team member had seen a sting ray get caught in Myrtle Beach. It was a real good ice breaker to get to know more about each other.

Christian Rest Home
The diversity activity that was complete at the Christian rest home for the month was “who did It” activity. The activity took place during our monthly staff meeting, a number of staff members participated in the activity and we all learned a lot of about each other on a different level. We all discussed how each of our experiences ties into how we can approve as a team and keep reaching for improving in the future.

Westminster Place
For our diversity activity this month we did the whose done it. We learned some new things about some employees such as one obtained american citizenship, one was proud they learned a new position on the trayline, a few are talking english classes to improve their english skills. A few people actually guessed who had done what correctly.

Western Reserve
For our January diversity activity at Western Reserve Masonic Community we did the 'who's done it' with the night crew before showtime. They enjoyed guessing who wrote which card and, with the night crew being such a close group of friends and going to school together a lot of them were able guess a couple of the cards. I was explaining to them how much of a benefit it is that they are able to work together, help each other, and even pick up each other's slack because they are such a close group. It was a good activity and they enjoyed breaking up the showtime routine!
