This year Smith Village organized and implemented a community healthfair for the residents and staff of Smith Village, and the local community.
As part of the healthfair, exercise physiology students from the local college came and did waist to hip ratios, BMI assessments, and offered various fitness and exercise tips. Angels at Home Health providers offered blood pressure screenings, as well as answered questions about when to start thinking about relying on home healthcare services. Smith Village’s memory support coordinator, podiatrist, and dentist were all available to offer additional information in regards to their areas of expertise, while offering handouts and additional samples for everyone to try.
In addition to obtaining various nutritional advice, guests were able to sample healthy snacks and learn more about the aspects of nutrition from Sarah McNicholas, Kati Thompson, and Heather Plizga; registered dietitians at Smith Village. As part of National Nutrition Month in March, we worked with residents, staff, and community members on how to shape up their plates and make healthier choices in their daily menu selections with an interactive activity. We also had information on how one soda/cookie/chocolate milk/ etc a day can easily add up to 15-25 pounds of weight gain a year. Having people try on an additional 10 pounds and walk around really made an impact on how important healthy eating is. Overall, everyone had a great time and really enjoyed the event.
