Western Home Communities: Go Red for Women!
On Friday November 2nd, the women of the Cedar Valley in Iowa participated in a red carpet event. The “Go Red for Women” event held annually in Waterloo Iowa is a great way to get people together around the area to promote and talk about healthy heart related issues that affect them. There is a silent auction, a wonderful luncheon, breakout sessions, and speakers talking all about how the heart can stay healthy through the years if they are educated on it.
This year, the Western Home Communities participated in a breakout session designed to aid in heart healthy cooking as well as a booth in the silent auction to provide information about the different living options available to women and their families when the time would be right. The team of Gary McCurdy, Darin Jarosz, Amanda Lynch, and Jonathan Wolford provided healthy and tasty pomegranate smoothies, as women visited the booths at the silent auction.
Darin and Amanda had a demonstration of a healthy salmon salad that was prepared for women as they listened to information on how salads can be what you make it and easy to boot! In the salad pictured below was mixed greens, feta cheese, granny smith apples, roasted pecans topped with salmon. Cranberry vinaigrette was made as well to be drizzled over the top of the salad. Participates asked numerous questions on healthy cooking, the right oils to use, where fresh fish could be bought in the area, and techniques in their own kitchen. The salad was a huge success and participates left with a recipe to take home so they could recreate their own at home.
