This month is Native American Heritage Month and at Brecon Village we celebrated with a guest speaker and presentation followed by a Native American meal.
I come from Anishnaabe decent and invited my mother and sisters to come and speak to our residents about Northern American native people, specifically the Hopi, Tliget and Anishnaabe people. My sister Elspeth is a Doctoral student at University of Michigan, where she also teaches several courses including those on the indigenous peoples of North America. Together she and the rest of my family gave an informative and in depth look at these three different indigenous groups, including our own, the Anishnaabe.
We followed this by serving a hearty North American meal of slow roasted turkey with a savory herb butter, a dill rainbow trout with sides of wild rice and succotash. For dessert, we made a traditional frybread with warm maple spiced apples.
