Norovirus Outbreaks Happen in Long-term Care Facilities.
The
leading cause of stomach viruses and of foodborne illness in the U.S. is
Norovirus. Norovirus is nasty and highly contagious, often called “the vomiting
disease” by the English for its stomach pains, nausea, diarrhea and yes, much
vomiting. It’s not the flu, which is a respiratory illness, so Norovirus is not
stopped with a flu shot. With only ten viral particles, it can make you sick.
The viral particle can survive on surfaces and can be passed by hands to food.
The
best way to protect our customers and ourselves against Norovirus is…… you
guessed it……hand washing. Frequent and thorough handwashing should be
re-enforced continually, especially at this time of year.
If
your facility has a Norovirus outbreak be aware that Compass has a detailed plan
to help you. Contact your District Manager if you become aware of an outbreak
developing.
