Top of Mind Safety
Safety is always top of mind at Peace Village!
Safety champion, Jean Swiecicki, engages staff with a fun and interactive
safety board to remind the team of our purpose and to go home the way they came
in! We are so grateful for these daily safety minders.
Skills Fair at Western Home
We held a Dietary Skills Fair this week and it was a great success. We kept it simple and will be doing these monthly moving forward. It was great on multiple levels. We helped our employees better understand the tasks that we entrust in them and it was a great engagement time.
Everyone had a good time and were all cross trained into something they hadn't been exposed to before. Our stations were:
- Reading Diet Spreads with Katie complete with a hands on skills test
- Emergency Preparedness with Julie complete with a Emergency Menu review
- Knife Skills with Neil complete with a hands on skills test
- Purees with Jeff complete with a demo and hands on skills test of making a puree salad

Safety Fair at Western Home
Jeff Camarata lead the Food Safety portion of the Safety Fair at Western Home today. Over 200 people stopped by the booth and took in some great information on food safety at work as well as in your own home.

Cantata's Safety Day
Despite the rainy weather Cantata held it's annual safety day for all
the associates. There were a wide range of topics covered including
food safety. We moved the BBQ indoors and the staff brushed up on their
safety techniques while enjoying a nice lunch.

"Read It and Eat It"
Rice Krispy treats and food safety were the highlight when the annual EcoSure Auditor stopped in at Walter P. Reuther. After the audit was completed, the management team took the opportunity to go over the audit with all associates with our “Read It and Eat It” project. Associates received a typed evaluation of the audit that they were to read through and discuss while enjoying homemade Rice Krispy Treats. It was a fun, informative activity that involved the whole team.

Food Safety Reminder from Fulton Manor
Thanksgiving celebrations have already started here at Fulton Manor and this is a good time to emphasize that turkey pop-up timers are useless. In the picture on the left the timer has not popped and the turkey is temping at 170, it was a little dry. Much worse though, the turkey on the right is only 147, NOT SAFE TO EAT, and the timer is popped. There is no substitute for a meat thermometer when checking the temperature of food.

Engagement Boards at Church of Christ EVS
We created a Safety Board using images to catch someones eye. The Community Works and Dining Services employees all signed as we Pledge to follow our Safety Rules. To ensure a Safe, Clean and Healthy Environment for the Residents and Staff, this board was created by the EVS Supervisor Christy Bryant
At the Church of Christ Care Center we Engaged with the Residents on Father's Day. We created a board highlighting the Fathers by creating a Bio and placing it on their favorite tool. These tools were displayed in the toolbox so all staff members could read about them. This Board was created by Katrina Martin (Lead Cook) and EVS Supervisor Christy Bryant.

MSLHATS competition on Twitter
Christian Rest Home HATS Champion Beth Loaf has been leading the way with instructing hospitality training to her fellow associates. Rising up to the @MALHATS challenge of posting innovative associate engagement exercises on Twitter, Beth got her co-workers involved in the Safety Minder of “Walk like a Penguin”. It got everyone up and involved, and gave her an entry on Twitter.
Join the fun! Each month a winner will be drawn from all entries, and a $50.00 gift card awarded. Every six months, another winner will be drawn from all entries for an IPAD mini. Create an exercise, show it in action, and post @MSLHATS. Aaaannnd GO!

Safety Post to Blog from Debbie Hanchett
I wanted to take a minute to talk to all of you about Safety. We know that safety is our #1 priority for our associates and for those we serve. At times we get caught up in the day to day and lose that laser focus.
I would like everyone to work toward keeping this as a top of mind item each day. Here are a few things to get you started:
1. Do you complete the safety orientation with all new hires?
2. Is the current 2015 copy of the safety manual posted and reviewed with all associates?
3. Do you go over the safety pledge with ALL associates on an annual basis and keep a signed copy in the employee files? Including managers?
4. Are the Golden Rules of Safety posted?
5. Are you doing the safety moments with Showtime daily?
6. Have you completed the JSA’s to determine the proper safety gear needed to perform tasks?
7. As managers, do you watch for proper use of safety gear? Cut gloves, safety shoes, steam gloves and aprons in the dish room, protective eye goggles when handling oven cleaner and delimer just to name a few. It is important that you reinforce this gear being worn as well as setting the example when you are in the kitchen.
8. Review the Eco Sure audit, including the safety portion with your team.
9. What steps do you take to ensure resident Safety?
10. Are your food allergy procedures in place and followed?
11. Do you have a safety board and post the # of days since a reported claim?
12. Do you have a safety committee for the dining services department? This is a great way to get some of your associates engaged as well. See the list below of topics to get you started.
Safety Meeting Topics, Safety Meeting Questions from Workplace Safety Experts. Com:
- What is our most important safety concern with regard to overall cost and liability to the company?
- What is our most common safety hazard or safety problem in an average day, week, etc?
- What safety measures have been falling behind or are not being properly enforced, regulated, and employed?
- What new safety measures or safety precautions need to be implemented in the workplace for the immediate future?
- What literature has been passed out to company employees?
- What signs and posters have been placed around the workplace to promote safety awareness?
- Who is in charge of which safety procedures?
I want to congratulate Brecon Village and the Memory Support Center for a successful Eco Sure Audit and for exemplifying our safety standards during that audit. The Auditor took pictures of our dishwasher and stated she has never seen anyone wearing all of the proper gear in her audits. Additionally, our safety orientation packet and forms was also considered a “best practice” and she took copies to share with other units, nice job Ashley!
