Touching Lives at Midwest Palliative Care

We had a patient named Patti who was dying of lung cancer.  Her husband Chris was spending every waking moment with her.  One day Chris approached me and asked for a favor.  Every month Chris and Patti would go on a date night to their favorite steak house.  Since Patti was unable to leave the room Chris asked if I could recreate their date night.  I went to a local Whole Foods and bought two steaks, I then proceed to make them a steak dinner, baked potato, steamed broccoli, sautéed mushrooms, and horseradish cream sauce.  Patti was so happy that she got to enjoy her date night with her husband.  The next day I received a thank you card from both of them.  The following week Patti's health declined raptly, she passed away while our music therapist was playing the harp in her room.  It was very sad for us all since the average time spent at our Hospice is around 10 days.  Patti stayed with us for over a month, we got to know her very well.
