Up to our 'Ears' in Corn at the Western Home Communities

Chef's all over the Western Home Communities campus have been busy shucking ears of corn for residents to enjoy at daily meals. The importance of this vegetable not only steams from its roots here in Iowa, but it also is a pastime for many residents who loved preparing this late summer pick for their families at home. It also is important in that many farmers live amongst the population at the Western Home. They have harvested this crop for many years and believe it is a delicious staple in their meals this time of the year. Over 350 dozen ears of local corn have been shucked this season. That's over 4200 ears of corn! Other local picks for the month of August that have been used in meals include; peaches, onions, potatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon, apples, green beans, peas, zucchini, and yellow squash. All this would not be possible without the help of our local farmers, big and small, who have brought the Western Home with some wonderful fruits and vegetables over these last few months!
