Here at the Felician Sisters Michigan in Livonia we had a Mardi Gras diversity moment. While making a King Cake for our Mardi Gras celebration we became curious as to why you bake a baby doll into it. While looking up the reason, we decided to incorporate it into the celebration. Instead of a baby doll, which is the tradition, we baked a silver ring into the cake.
Whomever received the piece with the ring was queen for the day, instead of the tradition of they host the party next year. We gave them a crown to go with their ring and told the sister they were queen until next Mardi Gras when they would have to turn the crown over to the new winner. Before the gave the sister the crown we announced to the entire community the tradition of the King Cake. We all learned something new and had a lot of fun too.
