The Fruit of the Season, submitted by DianeCollins/registered dietitian at IHM Sister in Monroe.
Strawberry picking season is here! Since I was a child we would go to Rowe’s
produce farm in Ypsilanti. MI. and pick the juiciest strawberries. There was something therapeutic about being
in the strawberry patch with the warm sun on your back and the smell of fresh
berries! Strawberries are a good source
of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. Did
you know that a serving of strawberries have more vitamin C than an orange? I have always thought of strawberries as the
only fruit that has the seeds on the outside.
However, it is actually part of the rose family and is the enlarged
receptacle of the flower. In the next
few weeks I encourage you to take a grandchild, child or a neighbor’s kid out
to the fields and have some fun in the berry patch. When picking is done enjoy the following
recipe!
Strawberry Smoothie
10 strawberries, hulled
½ cup almond milk
½ cup plain low-fat yogurt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon wheat germ
1 teaspoon chia seeds
8 cubes of ice, crushed
DIRECTIONS:
1.
In a blender combine the first six ingredients.
Toss in the ice. Blend until smooth and
creamy. Poor into glasses and serve.
