I wanted to take a minute to talk to all of you about Safety. We know that safety is our #1 priority for our associates and for those we serve. At times we get caught up in the day to day and lose that laser focus.
I would like everyone to work toward keeping this as a top of mind item each day. Here are a few things to get you started:
1. Do you complete the safety orientation with all new hires?
2. Is the current 2015 copy of the safety manual posted and reviewed with all associates?
3. Do you go over the safety pledge with ALL associates on an annual basis and keep a signed copy in the employee files? Including managers?
4. Are the Golden Rules of Safety posted?
5. Are you doing the safety moments with Showtime daily?
6. Have you completed the JSA’s to determine the proper safety gear needed to perform tasks?
7. As managers, do you watch for proper use of safety gear? Cut gloves, safety shoes, steam gloves and aprons in the dish room, protective eye goggles when handling oven cleaner and delimer just to name a few. It is important that you reinforce this gear being worn as well as setting the example when you are in the kitchen.
8. Review the Eco Sure audit, including the safety portion with your team.
9. What steps do you take to ensure resident Safety?
10. Are your food allergy procedures in place and followed?
11. Do you have a safety board and post the # of days since a reported claim?
12. Do you have a safety committee for the dining services department? This is a great way to get some of your associates engaged as well. See the list below of topics to get you started.

I want to congratulate Brecon Village and the Memory Support Center for a successful Eco Sure Audit and for exemplifying our safety standards during that audit. The Auditor took pictures of our dishwasher and stated she has never seen anyone wearing all of the proper gear in her audits. Additionally, our safety orientation packet and forms was also considered a “best practice” and she took copies to share with other units, nice job Ashley!
