Western Home
Communities Executive Chef Randy Husted was invited to be a guest speaker this
past weekend in a multi county local food safety workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to teach
small and large farmers the importance of food safety and how to keep their
produce safe during its journey from seed to plant to local restaurant. Husted’s main objective was to help the
farmers understand how to go about getting their home grown produce into their
local restaurants and business. Chef
Husted has played a major role over the past few years in some of the smaller
communities helping small and large farmers get their food into local
restaurants. Husted educated the farmers
on what he expects from a local producer.
Food safety was a major part of the discussion as well as pricing,
availability, and business expectations from a Chef and expectations from a
Farmer. The question and answer part of
the meeting lasted for about 2 hours and helped Husted build more relationships
in the community. The class was very
excited to hear about how Western Home buys produce from the local farms and
holds a private “farmers market” for the residents at Western Home. “Building relationships over the past year
and getting to know our local farmers will play a major role in getting good
local produce for our residents over the coming season.” Husted stated for the local paper.
