Dietitian’s Nicole
Blair and Diane Collins, were running out of the gates celebrating the Kentucky
Derby with their residents and staff at Chelsea Retirement Community
Center. They donned on their Derby hats
played music of the sounds of the Derby and strolled through the community
serving non- alcoholic mint juleps.
Handouts included a word search pertaining to the Derby and Health benefits of mint. Did you know mint leaves not only freshen
breath but can help with headaches, the digestive
system, and skin care. Not to mention
how wonderful it tastes in a non-alcoholic mint julep. As one community member stated, “who cares
who wins the race, I’m enjoying my beverage!”
Ingredients
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 cups cold water
5 cups crushed ice
2-1/2 cups chilled ginger ale
3/4 cup lemon juice
6 mint springs (at least)
Lemon slices for garnish if you wish
Directions:
Mix sugar, cold water, lemon juice and at least six mint sprigs in a bowl and let stand for 45 minutes. Strain mixture and remove mint. Because this takes 45 minutes to meld the flavors, be sure to make more than enough at once to serve all your guests.
Using two 2 quart pitchers place half of the above mixture and half of the ginger ale in each pitcher. Top with lemon and additional mint sprigs in the pitchers or use for each glass.
This recipe makes approximately 3 quarts Non-Alcoholic Mint Julep (about 12 - 8 ounce cups).(Taken from announcingit.com)
